Doug and Nancy Hastad Hall

Carroll's newest academic building, Doug and Nancy Hastad Hall, was dedicated on Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, and welcomed its first students for the spring semester. The building, which is LEED Silver certified, houses the nursing, physics/engineering and exercise science programs as well as provides space for other academic classroom needs. In May 2019, Hastad Hall earned a U.S. Green Building Council Wisconsin Award of Excellence in the “Innovative Design, New Construction” category. The building also won a People’s Choice award from the council during voting in June.

Building Features

Doug and Nancy Hastad Hall features classrooms and laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art technology and equipment. The building also boasts one of the first green roofs in Waukesha.

Donald and Martha DeWees Nursing Simulation and Collaboration Hub

The top floor of the building is a bright, airy space that looks like a modern hospital. It boasts five simulation rooms featuring state-of-the-art medical manikins (including a birthing suite) and adjoining control/observation rooms, a central lecture space, debriefing pods and a large examination room, equipped with 10 hospital beds and 10 examination tables.

"This new space offers our nursing students a much more accessible and fully-featured learning experience," according to Dr. Jamie Hansen, interim chair of the department of nursing. "We can really mimic an actual hospital setting here, providing our students with great experiences." The additional space also means that Carroll nursing students can more readily access lab spaces to practice critical skills.

The nursing facility exemplifies Carroll's commitment to excellence in nursing education. In 2017, 78 students graduated with a Carroll University Bachelor of Science in Nursing and each of those students passed their NCLEX (National Council Licensure Examination) exam on the first try. That accomplishment ranks the nursing program as the best in the state of Wisconsin from April-September 2017. The program was also ranked #1 out of 1,899 programs in the country.

Bucyrus Center for Applied Physics and Engineering

The lower level of Doug and Nancy Hastad Hall features the Bucyrus Center for Applied Physics and Engineering. Facilities on that floor include:

Exercise Science Laboratories

The lower level of the building also features two state-of-the-art exercise science laboratories for prescription and research learning. Exercise science program students work in both Hastad Hall and Ganfield Gymnasium laboratories while testing athletes and performing research. Multi-use Classrooms and Study Spaces

The building features lecture halls with traditional auditorium-style seating or modular seating areas for collaborative learning and a computer lab. The rooms range from 2,500 to 1,300-square-feet and have learning space for between 100 and 60 students. All rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. Each floor of the building includes a convenient study space for students.

About Doug and Nancy Hastad

Doug and Nancy Hastad Hall is named in honor of Carroll's 14^th President, Dr. Doug Hastad, and Nancy Hastad. President Hastad began his tenure at Carroll in 2006 and retired in 2017. Education played a significant role in shaping both Doug and Nancy's personal and professional lives. After earning their undergraduate degrees at Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., in 1971 and 1972 respectively, they both became educators. President Hastad's career in higher education spanned many roles. These included faculty, chair, dean, provost and, prior to coming to Carroll, serving as chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

During President Hastad's tenure, Carroll University was transformed in many ways: record enrollment; strengthened community relationships; new undergraduate and graduate programs; new academic buildings and athletic facilities; and an enviably strong financial position. President Hastad encouraged everyone on campus to "leave things better than they found them." He and Nancy put those words into action every day. Through their active engagement and volunteer service in our community, they set an example for us all.

This pioneering couple opened doors and forged partnerships within and beyond the Waukesha and Milwaukee communities. Together, they promoted an environment of excellence in teaching and learning that moved Carroll forward, positioned it for future growth and innovation and built upon its enduring legacy as Wisconsin's first institution of higher education. Through their leadership and example, Doug and Nancy Hastad revitalized Carroll's commitment to its mission, and enhanced its ethos of respect, integrity and stewardship.

Project Background

Doug and Nancy Hastad Hall was the second phase in a multi-phase project that included the building of Michael and Mary Jaharis Science Laboratories (opened in fall of 2016) and the renovation of Rankin Hall (opened in fall of 2018). The entire project maintains a focus on one of our top priorities, and a key element of the university's strategic plan, to "improve academic quality and strengthen the core educational experience for students."

Plans for the improvements came at a time when space was of necessity; nearly two-thirds of Carroll students major in the sciences. The university is especially strong in the health and medical science fields and has experienced unprecedented demand for programs in the fields of nursing, physician assistant studies, physical therapy, public health, psychology and exercise science/physiology.

Funding for Doug and Nancy Hastad Hall

Two challenge grants were issued for the building, including a $1 million challenge grant provided by two trustees, Joseph Zvesper ’76 and Timothy Sullivan ’75, which helped fund project costs. In addition, a $1 million challenge grant was issued by the Bucyrus Foundation of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. The funds from that challenge were designated for the Bucyrus Center for Applied Physics and Engineering. History of the Building Site

The area where Doug and Nancy Hastad Hall now stands once belonged to Lowry Hall, which was named for alumnus and former trustee, James Kerr (J.K.) Lowry. Lowry Hall of Science was dedicated on October 22, 1949 to recognize his tremendous service, love and loyalty to Carroll. The building originally housed laboratories, lecture rooms and offices for chemistry and physics programs. Lowry Hall was razed in August 2016 to make room for Doug and Nancy Hastad Hall.
